Sonora Green Team Kicks off 2010-2011

Sonora Green Team

Sonora Elementary School in Costa Mesa has lots of spirit and now they have a Green Team to harness their spirit about recycling!

rally

Recycling Presentation

Thanks to Ginger Castillo, the Sonora Green Team is off to a fantastic start. Over 50 kids joined the team for its first year. To kick off the 2010-2011 school year the Green Team is currently holding a Recycling Rally. On Day #1, Torelli Realty and Orange Coast College kicked off the rally with assemblies for the student body that educated the students more about recycling. The presentation was a great way to gear up for the Recycling Rally slated for October 15-21, 2010.

How the Recycling Rally Works

Students have been asked to bring in all of their empty plastic water bottles and soda cans. Each classroom is keeping track of the amount of bags they bring in. Then all the goods are being shipped over to the Orange Coast College Recycling Center. Sonora Elementary School now has an account at OCC (thanks to Michael Carey – AKA “Recycle Mike”) so people can bring these items to the OCC Recycling Center and the money can be credited to Sonora. At the end of the rally, there will be 2 prizes: the winning classroom of the younger grades will get a pizza party and the winning classroom of the upper grades will win a trip to the landfill.

What this means

More than raising money, the purpose of the Sonora Green Team is to teach the students about how their actions impact the world through recycling and energy efficiency. Students are taking simple steps in the classroom to reduce waster by writing on the backside of paper. In the future they are looking to waste-free lunches.

The Tie In

As a local real estate company, we are proud to see our students learning about such an important issue. Sustainability is important in real estate and home construction too. We all want the environment we live in to thrive. Go Sonora Green Team!

Look Out For…

Torelli Realty and OC will be doing another Recycle Presentation and Recycle Rally at Adams Elementary School in the near future. Would your school like one? Let us know at holly@torellirealty.com. We will also be providing the results from the Sonora Recycle Rally at the end of the week.

Costa Mesa Schools – Back To School Tips To Keep Your Home Organized

Back To School

Costa Mesa schools are back in session. During this busy time of year we wanted to give you a few tips that will make your life easier and help you keep your housekeeping on track:

-Pick out clothes for your children the night before (or teach your older children to select clothing beforehand.) This will help everyone stay on schedule during the morning rush and prevent disagreements about what your kids can wear.

-Make lunches on the weekend and pre-pack for the week. This will save precious moments in the am. Plus you’ll only be making a mess once. (You can do the same thing for dinners too!)

-Designate an area of your house as the backpack/school book drop. Kids tend to rush in and drop their stuff and leave the house looking like a hurricane hit it. If you set aside a space for those items, the house will stay more organized.

-Set up a laundry schedule and stick to it. This is especially useful if your kids are in sports. Teach your kids where the dirty laundry goes and make sure they adhere to the cycle.

Have a safe back-to-school season!

Costa Mesa City Council – Jim Righeimer Makes It Official

Costa Mesa City Council just gained another candidate for City Council, Jim Righeimer. This morning Righeimer made his nomination official outside of Costa Mesa’s City Hall. In his speech, he said that his biggest goal is to make the city family-friendly and a place that continues to attract young families moving in. Why? They support the local churches, schools, businesses, and athletic programs. He emphasized the need for better infrastructures as far as sport facilities, schools, and more.

As Costa Mesa Realtors we’re all for attracting families. Seeing the enthusiasm and growth in school programs like the ones at Estancia High School & Costa Mesa High School are great sources of pride for the community. Athletic programs and facilities are a priority for organizations like Costa Mesa United and provide fantastic facilities and groups for the youth. Costa Mesa is our home too and we’re glad to help people choose it for their home as well.

Costa Mesa Schools – Estancia High School Summer Jr. Cheer Camp

Costa Mesa Schools are holding some great activities for the youth during the summer. Coming up July 21-23, 2010 Estancia High School will be hosting the Estancia Summer Jr. Cheerleading Camp. This activity is a great way for children ages 4-14 to focus on cheer and dance in a setting that will prepare them for a successful cheerleading future. The Cheerleading camp caters to both beginners and experienced cheerleaders so whether the children are newbies or want to brush up on their skills they will benefit from the instruction.

Flyer

According to Yumi Watanabe-Patterson there are 3 special things to note about this camp:

1. All the cheers & dances will be taught by the one & only Estancia Eagle Cheerleaders

2. The registration fees go toward growing the cheerleading program at Estancia High School

3. In order to accomodate beginners & “pros” the day will start with a group warm up & some basic cheer instruction, then break into smaller more personalized groups, and finally gather together as a group at the end of the day to enjoy each others’ company.

Cheerleading is an activity that develops many great skills in the participants. Besides being a source of community spirit, cheerleading has many great bonuses like building confidence, focusing on teamwork, and encouraging the youth to workout in a fun way. Memorizing all the routines is no easy task either and learning all the cheers and dances takes admirable discipline.

As a bonus, the participants of Summer Jr. Cheer Camp will receive an official Estancia Jr. Cheerleader shirt, pom poms, and hair bow. On the final day of camp they will perform at the Eagle Rally. Plus, the Jr. Cheerleaders will be cheering at an official Estancia High School Varsity Football game during the 2010 football season!

Costa Mesa offers many great programs like this for the youth to enjoy. Recreational activities are something that many people look for in the community where they choose to call home. Without doubt Costa Mesa is a great place to be a kid…We’re proud to flaunt the activities that are going on here and make our town a desirable place to live. We’re always looking for ways to highlight community programs so make sure to send us your pictures and comments for the activities going on at Costa Mesa schools.

Recycling Rally Recap for Costa Mesa School – Adams Elementary

By teaming up with Orange Coast College and the Adams Elementary School PTA, Costa Mesa real estate company Torelli Realty helped to educate the students at Costa Mesa’s Adams Elementary School about the importance of being green by hosting the Cans for Kids (And Plastic Bottles Too!) Rally. After giving the kids a presentation on the 3 R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle), the students were challenged to recycle on campus and they were rewarded with money for their school.  We’re so proud of the students for their efforts – in just one week they raised $65 for their school just by recycling their aluminum cans and plastic drink bottles! That translates into 1,142 beverage containers!!! Adams Elementary School plans to continue recycling throughout the 2010-2011 school year and we’re excited to help them kick it off… What great role models for us all! By doing simple things like this for the environment, the children of Costa Mesa are really pitching in and making a huge difference. Our vision is to help all the Costa Mesa schools with similar programs. Please contact Holly at Torelli Realty if you’d like more info on how to do this program at your Costa Mesa School.

Thank you to OCC’s Michael Carey for his help. We’d also like to thank Dora Danesa with the Adams Elementary School PTA.

Costa Mesa residents come from a variety of backgrounds and it’s important for the students to recognize that all cultures and backgrounds are valuable and unique.

At tonight’s fair, parents and teachers will be setting up booths that highlight the various on-campus clubs and there will be entertainment from different cultures. There will also be a variety of food from the different cuisines to sample. An event like this is important because it gives students the chance to appreciate what other cultures offer and it unites everybody. We hope everyone has a fun night, learns interesting facts, and eats delicious food!

Costa Mesa Parks – Canyon Park Cleanup

Costa Mesa is home to a variety of neighborhood parks, which offer residents a place to enjoy nature and recreational activities. On the Westside, one of Costa Mesa’s neighborhoods, the community can enjoy Canyon Park, which is located at 970 Arbor Street, near the intersection of 19th Street and Whittier Avenue.  On June 19, 2010, there is a very special event happening at Canyon Park – The Battle of the Brush.

The Battle of the Brush is the first ever annual junior high school football community service event. In an effort to clean up the park and showcase the community, the teams will be sprucing up the park. The civic minded students and coaches (Costa Mesa High School Mustang Coach Jeremy Osso and Estancia Eagles Coach Mike Bargas) will take to the “playing field” and give the park a mini makeover by raking, trimming trees, pulling weeds, and more. Thanks so much to the City of Costa Mesa for loaning the teams tools and providing trash pickup.

The event is the culmination of a dream long held by the High School Booster Presidents Frank Albers (Costa Mesa High School) and Steve Mensinger (Estancia High School). Since Costa Mesa supports these teams, the teams are thrilled to give back.

This isn’t the first time that Canyon Park has been cleaned up by the community. Back in 1994 the park had a cleanup day as well where members of the community removed litter, cleaned up weeds, and added new plants. Then in 1997 there was an Earth Day Cleanup as well. We admire the giving spirit of the football teams – thanks for giving back to Costa Mesa and keeping it a beautiful place to live… You make our Realtors proud!
