Costa Mesa High School Cheer Camp Is Here

Costa Mesa High School Cheer Camp Is Here

Costa Mesa High School Cheer Camp is here for a 6th year! Estancia High School just wrapped up their successful cheer camp and now the award winning Costa Mesa Cheer Team is fired up to host a Youth Cheer Clinic. The clinic is open to incoming grades Pre-K through 8. Since the camp is open to such a wide range or ages and skill levels, the group will divide so that everyone gets attention and instruction. There will also be cheer-offs between the participants from different schools and the winning schools will get to take home spirit sticks!

What will they be learning?

-A One-of-a-Kind Dance – a special UCA choreographed dance not taught at any UCA camp!

-Some basic cheers

-A gymnastic review

-Basic stunting

-Proper safety techniques

According to Kori Kutch Johnson, Coach of the Costa Mesa High School Cheer Team

The camp “gives the team an opportunity to bond with the kids in our city and to give the kids a chance to learn and build on their cheer skills. It also gives the young kids time to be with their friends, make new friends, and have a feeling of belonging to their future school.”

Camp hours are from 9am-11am on Aug. 16-19. Make sure to come support the cheer campers when they show off their new skills at the Halecrest Chili Cook-Off on Aug. 29.  Once football season starts the campers will have a chance to show off their skills at a Costa Mesa High School Football game during Halftime at Jim Scott Stadium, Estancia High School. Once that date is determined we’ll be sure to let you know.

The camp costs $80 per person, which includes a t-shirt, snacks, ribbon, group photo, and participation certificate. For households with multiple children the cost will drop to $65 for each additional child. The money will be used to support the Costa Mesa High School Cheer Team.

Costa Mesa Non-Profit Spotlight: Working Wardrobes

Costa Mesa Non-Profit Working Wardrobes

Costa Mesa non-profits are a very important resource for the community. We recently had a chance to form a partnership with Working Wardrobes, located in Costa Mesa. What is Working Wardrobes? Founded 20 years ago by Jerri Rosen, the mission of the organization is to “empower men, women and young adults in crises to confidently enter the workforce through career development and wardrobe services.” The center does a wonderful job of providing job skills and programs through a host of services. There are plenty of things we as a community can do to help Working Wardrobes achieve its goals.

The Goals

–          The donation center needs gently-used donations that are clean and on hangers. Please make sure the clothing is work-friendly – both professional and casual attire is needed. They have a donation center open six days a week from 10-2…And in an effort to help Working Wardrobes we are happy to pick up clothing from your home if you contact us and the clothing is ready to go. They need clothing for men, women, and young adults.

–          Jerri Rosen said that, “Accessories are just as important!” Bring on the jewelry, scarves, and more!

–          Men’s belts and shoes that are in good shape are a high demand item… Clean out your closets!

–          Their Working Wardrobes Thrift Shop in Anaheim accepts used household items, sporting goods, books and small furniture items like lamps, coffee tables, and artwork that they resell and use the money to fund the organization… So don’t throw it out when you can give it away and help others in need. Apply the law of ‘reuse.’ Working Wardrobes also has three upscale resale shops called The Hanger where the public is invited to shop at these stores as well. There are locations in Brea, Laguna Niguel, and Tustin… we’ll give you coupons if you’d like to check it out so let us know!

–          The center also is in need of stuffed animals to give to clients so they have something for their children.J

Volunteering & Fundraising News

Working Wardrobes is a great place to volunteer any day of the week and for special events – both fundraisers and client service events. Community service hours for teens can easily be done in a variety of ways.

They also do unique fundraisers like Baubles, Bangles & Bags to raise money. The event was a smashing success – very classy and fun!

The “OC” Alley is Coming on September 15!

A really fun event that is coming up September 15 – The “OC” Alley. For a $25 ticket donation, anyone can go to the event at the Wyndham Orange County and check out 25 unique boutiques that are offering special deals for Early bird Christmas shopping (or for your own pleasure). Plus complimentary food, wine, and parking will be provided… So for the cost of the ticket you are all ready getting a fabulous deal! They will also be accepting donations during this event. What a cool “Happy Hour!” Make sure to sign up soon and invite your friends.

Costa Mesa The Halecrest and Hall of Fame 2010 Chili Cook-Off

The Halecrest and Hall of Fame 2010 Chili Cook-Off

The Halecrest and Hall of Fame 2010 Chili Cook-Off is an annual event held at Halecrest Park. Right now the event is looking for some chili connoisseurs to whip up their best batches of chili for the community to sample. The contest is open to individuals or teams – whatever it takes to create the best chili dish!

Sign Up By August 18 PLEASE – see below for details.

Dish up your meanest chili concoction and be judged in the following categories:

-People’s Choice Award (picked by your neighbors & friends)

-Best spicy Chili

-Most Unique

A tip from Mike Brumbaugh over at the Halecrest Association:

Mike will not be entering the contest however he does have a tip: “Spicy is key but not so hot you can’t taste the chili!”

What you need to bring is:

-2 crock-pots full of your homemade chili

-A serving utensil

-Condiments to complement your chili for the best scoring

-Décor to decorate your booth (if you want to do that)

-Someone to man the booth from 12-3pm

Another Great Costa Mesa Tradition!

This is an example of another Costa Mesa neighborhood doing a great community event. It’s a Costa Mesa tradition that all are welcome to attend, whether they live in Halecrest/Hall of Fame or not. Plus the event is totally free for attendees although they will be accepting donations for the Costa Mesa Community Foundation to help save childrens programs. The Costa Mesa High School Cheer Camp participants will even be performing… Don’t you just love to see the values of community, friendship, and fun reflected in Costa Mesa?
